In my work, I explore the relationship between my heritage and its existence today. While I feel very close to my Guatemalan roots, I want to learn more about the Mayan people and indigenous groups. For many years these tribes, groups and people have been marginalized. It is with the utmost respect that I choose to depict and highlight their influence and relevance to the world today not just my own. The paintings I create are most often layered and textured to symbolize their multidimensional characteristics. I make it a point to find their beauty and bring it to the viewer to begin a dialogue. The goal is always to discover something new and open a conversation. My most distinctive element in most pieces is my use of gold leaf, it’s intentional because it’s timeless. It represents different things to me just as it may represent something else to the viewer.
Natalia Valle is a fine arts painter from Los Angeles, California. While she has lived in L.A. most of her life, she spent her childhood years in Guatemala City, Guatemala. It was then, she developed a love and fascination with the colorful and diverse Mayan culture.
In her early teenage years she made a life changing trip to Tikal, Peten, ( a very sacred and significant archeological site for the Maya people). This ground was the beginning of artistic self discovery and development in her own identity. In the years that followed, her work has directly reflected her ongoing exploration of the many layers her culture reflects and represents.
While she attended Santa Monica College in 2007, she was selected to be part of the art mentor group headed by Ronn Davis. In 2008, she showcased in the group show “So Fly,” curated by Peter Frank.
Most recently she has showcased with RAW artists in Los Angeles and in 2019 was featured in VoyageLA as part of local artists in the city of Los Angeles.
As her work continues to develop, her hope is to open a dialogue between the viewer and the world around them.
